Help with Your Zakat

  • Zakat is applicable to all Muslim adults and is calculated at 2.5% of your total wealth. Your Zakat payment is due one "lunar year" after your wealth exceeds the "Nisab".
  • The Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth an individual must possess in order to be applicable to pay Zakat.
  • There are two measures to determine Nisab: Gold (3 ounces or 87.48 grams) or Silver (21 ounces or 612.36 grams). Most scholars are of the opinion that the lower Silver Nisab value be used, as this allows for a greater number of people being applicable to pay Zakat.
  • If you cannot remember the date your wealth exceeded the Nisab, then it should be estimated. If this is not possible, then you should select a specific date in the Islamic calendar and keep to it annually.
  • You should aim to keep to a fixed date (in the Islamic calendar) for your annual Zakat payment in order to avoid late payment. Most people tend to pay their Zakat around the same time each year, e.g. during Ramadan.
